Hawthorn Woods Properties: Acre Lots, Ponds and Old Oaks
There's no real downtown here. Hawthorn Woods is a residential village of large lots, many of them an acre or more, spread along Midlothian Road, Old McHenry Road and Gilmer Road north of Lake Zurich. Some properties are open lawn with a few big shade trees. Others are half woods. Ponds and low wet spots are common.
Tree-wise, it's oak and hickory in the wooded parts, maples and honeylocust in the lawns, willows by the ponds, and long rows of spruce and pine along lot lines and driveways. Ash used to be on that list. Emerald ash borer has killed most of the untreated ones across Lake County.
Lakefront Tree Service is based over in Libertyville. We're insured for tree work and we cover the whole county, including unincorporated Forest Lake next door.
Large Tree Removal in Hawthorn Woods
Space is the good news. On an acre lot, a tree out in the open can often be felled whole, which is the simplest and quickest way to do it. Then it's cut up where it lands.
The trees people worry about usually aren't out in the open, though. They're the oak beside the house, the cottonwood leaning over an outbuilding or the pool fence, the dead spruce in a row with live ones on both sides. Those get taken down in sections.
We look at every big removal in person before pricing it, free, because a photo doesn't always show the lean or what's going on at the base. Details are on the large tree removal page.
If the tree's already dead, don't wait for it to pick its own day. Dead wood dries and gets brittle, ash most of all. Read up on taking down dead trees before it gets worse.
Brush, Logs and Firewood: Cleanup on Hawthorn Woods Jobs
A big tree is a lot of material. One mature oak makes a brush pile and a log pile that would surprise you. Hauling all of it is part of the job unless you tell us different.
Brush is chipped. Wood is recycled. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so not a stick of it is dumped. We rake up and clear the drive before we go.
Plenty of people on larger properties burn wood. If that's you, say so when you get the quote. We'll leave the wood cut and put it where you want it, by the shed or along the fence line.
Tree Trimming and Pruning in Hawthorn Woods
With this many trees on a property, you can't prune them all, and you don't need to. Put the effort where it counts: over the house, over the driveway, over the patio and play area, and along the road.
What that looks like: dead limbs removed, branches cleared off the roof, low limbs raised so a delivery truck fits up the drive, and overgrown crowns opened up a little. Thinning and raising a crown is the usual fix for older shade trees.
Two rules we stick to. No topping, because it ruins a tree. And oaks get pruned in winter only. From spring through early fall, fresh cuts attract beetles that spread oak wilt. Same goes for elms. Most other trimming is also best done dormant, late fall through winter.
Stump Grinding in Hawthorn Woods
On a big lot it's tempting to leave stumps. Out in the back corner, sure. In the front lawn or along the driveway, they're in the way of the mower and they look unfinished.
Grinding takes a stump down below the surface so you can fill and seed. A whole row of spruce stumps can be quoted as one job. Underground utilities have to be marked beforehand through JULIE, a free 811 call. Also point out sprinkler lines, septic fields and invisible fence wire, because JULIE doesn't mark those.
See stump grinding for how it's done.
Storm Damage and Fallen Trees on Hawthorn Woods Lots
Open ground lets the wind build, and a tall tree standing alone in a lawn takes the brunt of it. After a storm, walk the property and look up as well as down. Broken limbs can hang in a crown long after the wind stops.
Tree on the house, on a car or across the driveway? Call (224) 944-8652. Don't text that one. A long driveway blocked by a trunk means nobody gets in or out, so we treat it as urgent and get there as fast as the crew can.
If lines are involved, ComEd goes first. We don't work in or touching power lines. For everything else, text photos and we'll quote the storm cleanup.
Village Permits for Tree Removal
Like many Lake County villages, yours may have rules about removing trees, and some villages require a permit even on private property. We don't recite ordinances. Call village hall first and ask what applies to your tree and your lot. Wooded lots and trees near ponds or wetlands are worth asking about by name. If you're in a subdivision with an association, check their rules as well.
How Quotes and Pricing Work for Hawthorn Woods Tree Service
Text a photo of the tree, limb or stump to (224) 944-8652 and say you're in Hawthorn Woods. For several trees, send a photo of each and number them. A written price comes back for the lot. Small jobs are quoted from the photos, and big removals after a free visit.
It's a flat price, agreed before any cutting. Size, location, condition, access and stump are what it's built on. On large lots, access is often easy, which helps. A tree over a roof or beside wires still takes more work than one in the open. Read how tree pricing works for more.
The crew runs 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and takes Sunday jobs by appointment.
