Trees and Lots in Long Grove
Long Grove is spread out. Homes sit back from the road on large lots, many of them wooded, along Old McHenry Road, Route 83 and Route 53. A lot of the village is on well and septic. The historic downtown by the covered bridge over Buffalo Creek is the tight part. Everything else has elbow room.
The woods here are mostly oak and hickory: white oak, bur oak, red oak, shagbark. Around the houses you get sugar maple, silver maple, spruce and white pine. Low ground near the creeks and ponds grows cottonwood and willow. Ash used to be all through it. Most of that is standing dead now.
Tree Removal Permits: Ask Before You Cut
Do this first. Many Lake County villages have tree rules, and some require a permit before you remove a tree, even one on your own land. We can't quote you the rule, and you shouldn't rely on a tree guy for that anyway. Check with village hall before we put you on the calendar.
If your lot has a conservation area or an easement on it, ask about that too. What you can cut inside it may be different from the rest of the yard.
Dead Ash and Hazard Tree Removal in Long Grove
The most common call from a wooded lot is a dead tree near something that matters. Usually ash. Emerald ash borer killed most untreated ash across the county, and the dead ones don't age well. The wood gets brittle fast, tops snap out, and the whole tree gets harder to take down the longer it stands.
You don't have to clear every dead tree off a wooded lot. Focus on the ones that can reach the house, the driveway, the garage, the well head or the kids' swing set. We can do dead tree removal for those and leave the rest to the woodpeckers.
For a big tree close to the house, we come out and look before we price it. No charge for that. Taking down a large tree means planning where every piece goes.
Long Grove Tree Trimming and Oak Pruning
Oaks are a big part of why people like it here, so prune them like you want to keep them. That means winter. From roughly spring through early fall, a fresh cut on an oak attracts the beetles that spread oak wilt. We schedule oak work for the cold months and so should anybody else you hire.
Elms are similar. Most other trees also do best trimmed while dormant, late fall through winter. The one thing that doesn't wait is a dead, broken or hazardous limb. That can come off any time.
Typical trimming work here: clearing limbs off the roof, opening up the driveway so delivery trucks quit hitting branches, and cleaning deadwood out of the big trees over the yard. No topping. We don't do it.
Stump Grinding in Long Grove
Grinding a stump is quick once the prep is done. The prep is the utility locate. Call JULIE at 811, it's free, and the public lines get marked.
On a well and septic lot there's more to think about. JULIE doesn't mark your septic tank, the field, or the line from the well to the house. If you know where they are, show us. The grinder and anything heavy should stay off the septic field.
Getting rid of a stump in the lawn makes sense. Out in the woods, most people just have us cut it low and leave it.
Storm Cleanup When a Tree Comes Down
Long driveways through the trees are great until one falls across yours. If a tree is blocking the driveway, sitting on the house or on a car, call us. Don't text for that. A storm call gets handled as fast as the crew can make it out. We don't promise a time.
If wires are involved, it's ComEd first. Don't touch the tree, don't touch the line, and keep the dog in. Once the power company clears it, we do the cleanup after the storm.
What Tree Work Costs in Long Grove
There's no price list because there's no standard tree. You text a photo and your town. We send back a written price. Small jobs are priced from the photos, and big removals get a free visit first. Here's what the price hangs on:
It's one flat price, agreed before any cutting. See how our pricing works for more.
- Size. A big oak is more work than a small crabapple.
- Location. Open lawn is easy. Up against a roof, fence, garage or wires is hard.
- Condition. Dead, brittle wood is harder and slower to handle.
- Access. How far the tree is from where equipment can get.
- The stump. In or out of the job.
Cleanup and Firewood on Long Grove Lots
The job isn't finished until the yard looks right. We clean up and haul the brush and wood away. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so brush gets chipped and logs get recycled.
Heat with wood or have a fire pit? Tell us you want the wood and we'll leave it cut where you want it. We're an insured crew based in Libertyville, and we work the towns around you as well, from Buffalo Grove to Hawthorn Woods.
