Tree Service in Vernon Hills Neighborhoods
Vernon Hills is a younger town than most of its neighbors. A lot of it went up as subdivisions, townhome groups and golf course neighborhoods like Gregg's Landing, with street trees planted in neat rows. That means many of the trees here are the same few kinds and about the same age: honey locust, maples, lindens, ornamental pears and spruce.
It also means ash. Ash was a favorite street and yard tree for a long time, and emerald ash borer has since killed most of the untreated ones across Lake County. Plenty of yards here have a gap, a stump or a bare trunk where an ash used to be.
Older, bigger trees show up along the edges. There are oaks in the woods along the Des Plaines River east of Milwaukee Avenue, and willows and cottonwoods around the ponds and along Indian Creek.
Tree Trimming and Pruning in Vernon Hills
When every tree on the street went in the same season, they all hit the awkward stage together. Branches reach the roof. The lower limbs hang over the sidewalk. Two trees planted close when they were small are now growing into each other.
A proper pruning fixes most of that. We clear the house, lift the low limbs, take out the dead and crossing wood, and keep the tree's natural shape. No topping. Lopping the top off flat is how you turn a decent tree into a problem.
Most of this is best done from late fall through winter while the tree is dormant. If you've got an oak, winter isn't a suggestion, it's the rule, because summer cuts invite the beetles that carry oak wilt. Broken or dangerous limbs get cut whenever they turn up.
Tree Removal in Vernon Hills
The removals we see here are mostly mid-size trees in tight places. A pear that split down the middle. A spruce that's brown on one side and crowding the fence. A dead ash between two driveways. They're not giants, but they sit close to siding, windows, air conditioners and the neighbor's lot.
So the work is careful, not fast. Removing a tree in a spot like that means taking it down in pieces and setting them where they can't hurt anything. With a dead tree, it also means not trusting the wood, because dead limbs break where live ones would hold.
If you're on the fence about a tree, send a picture anyway. Sometimes the answer is to trim it and look again next winter.
Permits, Associations and Vernon Hills Tree Rules
Two different sets of rules can apply here. The first is the village. Many Lake County villages have tree rules, and some require a permit to remove a tree on private property. A permit may be needed, so ask at village hall before anything is cut.
The second is your association, if you have one. In townhome and condo communities, the trees are often common property, and the association decides what happens to them. Even in single-family subdivisions, the covenants sometimes cover tree removal. Read yours or ask the board before you book us.
Trees in the parkway, the grass strip along the street, are usually the village's responsibility and not the homeowner's.
Stump Grinding for Vernon Hills Yards
Plenty of people here inherited a stump. The ash came down a while ago, somebody cut it flush, and it's been sitting in the lawn since. Getting rid of an old stump is a quick job most of the time. It's ground down below grade and you're left with chips you can use as mulch or have us take.
Subdivision yards are full of buried lines, so the locate comes first. In Illinois you call JULIE at 811 and they mark the utilities for free. Sprinkler lines and invisible dog fences aren't part of that, so if you have either, show us where they run.
Storm Work and Fallen Trees in Vernon Hills
Ornamental pears are the usual storm casualty in neighborhoods like these. They grow with weak, narrow forks, and a good wind peels half the tree off. Big maple limbs come next.
If something's down on your roof, your car or across your driveway, call (224) 944-8652. Calling beats texting when it's urgent. Fallen tree calls are handled as fast as the crew can get there. We won't give you a made-up arrival time on a night when half the county has limbs down.
Anything on or near a wire belongs to ComEd first. We don't touch trees in power lines.
Vernon Hills Tree Quotes, Cleanup and Hours
Text a photo and your town. That's step one. You'll get a written, flat price, and it won't change once we've agreed on it. Small jobs are priced off the photos. Large removals get a free look in person.
What moves the price is the size of the tree, what's under and around it, whether it's healthy or dead, how we get equipment to it, and whether we're grinding the stump. There's more on that on the pricing page.
Cleanup is part of the job. Brush is chipped, wood is recycled, and the lawn is raked before the crew leaves. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so nothing gets dumped. If you'd like the wood, we'll leave it cut where you point. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, with Sundays by appointment.
