Tree Trimming and Oak Pruning in Forest Lake

When you live under big trees, trimming isn't a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Limbs die back. Branches reach the roof. A crown gets so thick that the yard under it turns to moss and mud.

Good pruning fixes those without changing what the tree is. We take out dead and broken wood, pull limbs back off the house, and thin where it's crowded so wind and light pass through. We don't strip the inside bare and we don't top. A topped tree is an ugly, weak tree.

Oaks have a season. Prune them in winter, not from spring through early fall, because fresh cuts bring in the beetles that spread oak wilt. Elms are the same way. Most other trees also do best trimmed dormant. If a limb is dead, cracked or hanging, forget the calendar and get it off. Here's more on pruning and trimming.

Forest Lake Lots: Wooded, Close to the Water, Mature Trees

Forest Lake sits in the southwest part of Lake County, a little north of Route 22. Hawthorn Woods wraps around much of it, and Lake Zurich and Kildeer are close by. It's not a village. It's an unincorporated neighborhood built around its own small lake.

The lots are wooded and the houses are tucked in among the trunks. Oak and hickory are the backbone. You'll also find maples, some old ash that didn't make it through emerald ash borer, and spruce or pine where somebody wanted screening.

That setting is the reason people live here, and it's also why tree work takes care. There's almost always something under the tree: a roof, a deck, a driveway, another tree you want to keep.

We're Lakefront Tree Service, insured for tree work and based in Libertyville.

Tree Removal in Forest Lake

Most folks here don't want to lose a tree, so removal tends to be the last step, not the first. It's the right step when the tree is dead, when the trunk is hollow or split, when it's leaning harder every year, or when a storm has already taken half of it.

Mature oaks and hickories are heavy, hard wood. Bringing one down beside a house means climbing it and lowering it piece by piece, with the big trunk sections handled last. Have a look at large tree removal to see how that's planned. We come out and look before quoting anything that size. No charge for the visit.

Dead ash is quicker to decide. It's brittle, it's not coming back, and it should come down sooner rather than later. See removing dead ash trees.

Permits and Tree Rules: Unincorporated Forest Lake

Because Forest Lake is unincorporated, your questions go to Lake County, not a village hall. Ask the county before you remove a tree. If your neighborhood has a community association, ask them too.

We keep it general on purpose. Rules differ from place to place across Lake County, and a village just down the road may require a permit where another doesn't. Get the answer from the source, then text us.

Stump Grinding for Forest Lake Properties

An oak stump will outlast your patience. The wood is dense and it rots slowly, so if it's in the lawn or beside the drive, grinding is the practical fix.

We grind below the surface and clean up after. Before that, the utilities get marked. Call JULIE at 811. It's free in Illinois. Let us know about anything private that's buried near the stump as well, since JULIE only marks the public lines.

Curious about the difference between grinding and taking the whole thing out? The stump removal page lays it out.

Emergency Tree Service After Storms in Forest Lake

Big trees over houses is a fine arrangement until the wind picks up. When a limb or a tree comes down on your roof, your car or across the driveway, call (224) 944-8652. That's a call, not a text. We respond to storm calls as fast as the crew can get there. We don't make promises about the hour.

Look for wires before you take a step toward it. If the tree is touching or tangled in power lines, it's ComEd's job first. Our crew stays out of the lines and off anything touching them.

Smaller damage, like a broken limb on the lawn or one hanging up in the crown, can be texted with a photo. Our emergency tree service page covers what to do while you wait.

Free Quotes and Flat Prices for Forest Lake Tree Service

The process is short:

The price is one flat number agreed before cutting. It depends on the tree's size, where it stands, its condition, access for equipment and whether the stump is included. We explain each on the pricing page. No dollar figures there, because a photo tells us more than a chart would.

Keep the wood if you want it. Oak and hickory make good firewood, and we'll leave it cut where you say. Otherwise it's hauled and recycled, and the brush is chipped. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills.

  • Text a photo of the tree, limb or stump, plus your town and address
  • A written price comes back. For a small job the pictures do it. A big removal gets a free visit
  • You pick the day
  • The crew does the work, cleans up and hauls the brush and wood

Forest Lake Tree Service Questions

Forest Lake isn't a village. Who do I check with before removing a tree?

Lake County, since Forest Lake is unincorporated. Ask before you set a date. If your property falls under a community association, check with them as well. We don't quote rules for any town or for the county, because the details are theirs to give. Once you know you're clear, text us a photo and we'll get you a price.

Can you thin my oaks so more light reaches the yard?

Yes, in winter. Thinning takes out selected branches through the crown so more light and air get through, without changing the tree's shape. Raising the lower limbs helps too. It has to wait for cold weather on oaks, because summer cuts draw the beetles that spread oak wilt. We won't top the tree or strip it out.

How do you take down a big oak without hitting the trees I want to keep?

By not dropping it. The oak is climbed and cut into sections from the top down. Each piece is tied off and lowered on a rope through the gaps, so it doesn't crash through the trees around it or land on the house. It takes longer than felling. On a wooded lot it's the sensible way, and we look at these in person before pricing.

What's the best month to schedule tree work in Forest Lake?

For pruning, any time from late fall through winter. Trees are dormant, oaks are safe to cut, and with the leaves off it's easier to see the structure. Removals can be done year-round. Dead, broken or hazardous limbs shouldn't wait for a season at all. Our days are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, with Sunday visits by appointment.

We burn wood. Can you leave the hickory and oak?

Yes. Say so when you book and we'll leave the wood cut where you want it, by the garage, the woodpile, wherever. The brush is still chipped and hauled away. If you'd rather not deal with it, we take all of it and the wood is recycled. Illinois doesn't let yard waste go to a landfill.

A branch is resting on the line to my house. Can you cut it?

Not until the power company deals with it. ComEd is the electric utility here, and a tree or limb touching or tangled in lines is their job first. Work in or touching power lines isn't something we do. Stay away from the branch, call ComEd, and once they've made it safe, we can remove the limb and trim back what's left.

Can you cable a split oak to save it?

No. Cabling and bracing aren't on our list. We also don't treat or diagnose trees, spray, inject, or plant. If a split oak can be made safer by taking weight off it, we can prune it in winter. If the split is bad and it's over the house, removal is what we'd offer. Text a photo of the split and we'll be straight with you.

How do I get a price without someone coming to the house?

Text photos to (224) 944-8652 with your address and a line about what you want done. Small jobs, like a limb, a small tree or a stump, are priced from the pictures and you get it in writing. For a big removal we do need to see it, and that visit is free. Nothing gets cut until you've agreed to the flat price.
