Emergency Tree Service and Storm Cleanup in Grayslake
Let's start with the urgent stuff. If a tree or a big limb is on your house, on your car or across your driveway right now, call (224) 944-8652. Don't text. A call is the right way to reach us for that.
We don't promise an arrival time. Nobody honest can after a big storm. What we do is get to emergency tree calls as fast as the crew can get there, make the mess safe, and clear it.
Two warnings. A tree touching a power line is ComEd's job before it's anyone else's, so keep back and call them. And a tree that's half down, cracked or leaning on the roof is still moving. Stay out from under it.
Grayslake Trees, From the Old Lake Streets to the New Subdivisions
Around Grays Lake and the downtown blocks off Center Street, the houses are older and the trees are big. Silver maples, oaks, a few surviving elms, tall spruces. They've had generations to grow over roofs, garages and each other.
The newer neighborhoods spread out toward Route 83, Route 120 and Washington Street. They were built on open farmland, so every tree there was planted. That means maples, honey locust, lindens, pears and crabapples, mostly still young enough to manage with good pruning. It also meant a lot of ash.
Then there's Prairie Crossing, laid out on purpose around prairie and open land, and Rollins Savanna on the north side, where the old oaks show what this ground looked like before the farms.
Tree Removal in Grayslake
The two halves of town give us two kinds of removals. In the old neighborhoods it's large trees over houses. Taking down a big tree that hangs over a roof is slow, piece-by-piece work, and it always gets a free visit before we name a price.
In the subdivisions it's usually a smaller tree in a snug spot. A pear that split. A maple planted too close to the foundation. And dead ash, still. Emerald ash borer killed most untreated ash across Lake County. If yours is standing dead, it's getting more brittle every season and it should come down soon.
We'll also tell you when a tree doesn't need to go. If a trim would solve it, that's what we'll quote.
Stump Grinding in Grayslake
After the ash died, a lot of yards were left with stumps. If you're tired of mowing around one, we grind stumps even when somebody else cut the tree.
Grinding takes the stump below the level of the lawn. It leaves a pile of chips and soil you can rake flat, use as mulch or have us haul. Top it up with dirt and you can seed right over the spot.
The utilities have to be marked before we start. In Illinois that means calling JULIE at 811, and it doesn't cost anything. In newer neighborhoods the lines to the house often cross the front lawn, right where the builder planted the tree.
Tree Trimming and Pruning for Grayslake Yards
Young trees in the subdivisions are at the age where a little pruning now saves a removal later. Taking out a doubled leader or a weak fork while the limbs are small is a minor job. Waiting until that fork tears out in a storm is a major one.
Old trees downtown need a different kind of attention. Trimming a mature tree is about getting deadwood out, taking weight off long limbs over the house, and clearing the roof and chimney.
Timing: most trees, late fall through winter. Oaks and elms, winter only, because growing-season cuts draw the beetles that spread oak wilt. Dead and broken limbs, any time. Topping, never.
Getting a Tree Service Quote in Grayslake
Text a photo and the word Grayslake to (224) 944-8652. You'll get a written price for the job. For small work, the photos are enough. For a big removal, we come see it first at no charge.
It's one flat price, and we agree on it before the saws come out. How we price tree work isn't a secret:
Pick a day that works. We're on the job Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm, and Sunday by appointment.
- Size of the tree
- What it's standing over or next to, like a roof, fence, garage or wires
- Condition, since dead and brittle wood is harder to handle
- How equipment gets into the yard
- Stump included or not
Village Permits and Parkway Trees
Before a removal, find out what the village requires. Many villages in Lake County have tree rules, and some call for a permit even when the tree is on your own lot. The village may require a permit, so check with village hall before the work is booked.
Ask about the parkway while you're at it. The tree between the sidewalk and the curb is usually the village's tree, and so is the decision about it. If you're in a neighborhood with an association, check their rules too.
Cleanup, Chips and Firewood
The job's not done until the yard is clean. The crew rakes up and hauls the brush and wood. Illinois law keeps yard waste out of landfills, so brush is chipped and wood is recycled.
Want to keep the wood? Tell us before we start and it's left cut where you want it. That goes for one armload or the whole tree.
