Third Lake Tree Service on Wooded Lake Lots
Third Lake isn't big. It's a village of homes around the lake it's named for, with Grayslake on one side, Lindenhurst to the north, and the Rollins Savanna forest preserve close by. That savanna gives you an idea of what this ground grew before the houses: scattered oaks over open land.
Plenty of oaks are still here, in back yards and along the shore. Bur oak, white oak, red oak. Around them you'll find hickory, maples, cottonwoods and willows down by the water, plus the spruces and pines people planted for screening.
Lots that back up to the lake often slope toward it. That's nice to look at and tricky to work on. Brush and logs have to be carried uphill to the street, and there's rarely a flat open spot to lay a tree down.
Oak Pruning and Tree Trimming in Third Lake
If you own an oak, here's the one rule to remember. Don't prune it between spring and early fall. Fresh cuts draw beetles, and those beetles carry oak wilt from sick trees to healthy ones. So oak work gets booked for winter.
Elms follow the same calendar. Most other trees are happiest with a dormant trim too, from late fall through winter. The exception for every species is a limb that's dead, broken or about to fall. That's a safety cut and it happens when it needs to.
On a wooded lot a trim can take dead wood out of the canopy, lift low limbs off the roof and deck, and open a view to the water without butchering the tree. We don't top trees for a view or for any other reason. Details are on the pruning and trimming page.
Tree Removal in Third Lake When There's Nowhere to Drop It
A big oak or cottonwood standing between a house and a lake has two bad directions to fall. So it doesn't fall. It gets climbed and taken down in sections, each one tied off and lowered under control. The trunk follows in short logs.
That kind of job always gets a free visit before a price. Photos are fine for a small tree in the open. They aren't enough for a large one over a roof, a deck or a dock. Read up on large tree removal if that's what you're facing.
Smaller removals are simpler. A dead ash on the property line, a spruce that's browned out, a volunteer box elder crowding the garage. Ash killed by emerald ash borer shouldn't be left standing long. It dries out, and dry brittle wood is hard to take down safely. The basics are on our tree removal page.
Broken Limbs and Storm Calls
Mature trees and summer storms mean broken limbs, and now and then a whole tree across a driveway. If something has landed on your house or car, or you can't get out, call (224) 944-8652 right away. Text for everything else. Storm jobs are handled as fast as the crew can reach you. We won't quote a clock time we can't keep.
A storm-broken limb on an oak can be cut in any month. That's the emergency exception to the winter rule. If the tree is in the power lines, it's ComEd's before it's ours. There's more under emergency tree work.
Third Lake Stump Grinding
An oak stump will sit there for a very long time if you let it. Grinding takes it below ground level and leaves chips you can rake out and cover with soil.
Two practical points. Underground utilities must be marked before grinding, and in Illinois that's a free call to JULIE at 811, made a few days ahead. And on a sloped or wooded lot, getting the grinder to the stump is half the job, so send a photo of the path in. Here's more on stump grinding.
Does Third Lake Require a Tree Removal Permit?
Ask village hall, and ask before you book the job. Many villages in Lake County have tree rules, and some require a permit before removing a tree even on private property. Yours may too. If you're in a homeowners association, check with them as well. We'll work to whatever they tell you.
Flat-Price Quotes for Third Lake Tree Work
Quotes are free. Text a photo of the tree, limb or stump along with your town, and you'll get a written price. It's a flat price for the whole job, agreed before any cutting starts.
What drives it: the size of the tree, where it's standing, its condition, how hard it is to reach, and whether you want the stump gone too. A tree on an open lawn by the road is one price. The same tree down a slope behind the house is another. Our page on pricing explains each factor.
Cleanup, Brush and Firewood
When the job's finished, the yard gets cleaned up. Brush is chipped and hauled. Logs go too, and the wood is recycled, since Illinois doesn't let yard waste go to the landfill. Oak makes good firewood, so if you'd like to keep it, tell us ahead of time. It'll be left cut where you want it.
