Gages Lake Tree Service: Unincorporated, So Who Makes the Rules?

Paperwork first, because it's different here. Gages Lake has no village hall. It's unincorporated Lake County, so the county is who you ask, not a village. Many Lake County villages require a permit before a tree comes down on private land, and the county may have rules of its own for unincorporated lots. We can't tell you what applies to yours. Call the county before you schedule a removal.

Two more things to check. If your street or subdivision has an association, it may have a say. And a tree out by the road may not be yours at all. If it stands in the road right-of-way, it could belong to the township or the county.

Gages Lake Lots: Narrow Roads, Deep Yards, Old Trees

The community sits between Route 45 and Hunt Club Road, south of Washington Street, with Third Lake to the northwest and Gurnee to the east. The Wildwood neighborhood is on the west side of the lake.

Near the water the lots tend to be narrow and deep, the roads are tight, and the trees are large. Cottonwoods and willows by the shore. Oaks and hickories on the higher ground. Silver maples and box elders wherever there was a gap. Farther from the lake the yards open up and you see more of the planted stuff: maples, spruces, pears, crabapples.

Narrow roads matter for tree work. There isn't always room to park a truck and pile brush in front of the house, so the plan for getting material out is part of the quote.

Gages Lake Tree Removal

Removals around here mostly fall into four kinds.

On a deep, narrow lot the tree comes down in pieces. A climber takes it apart from the top and the ground crew lowers each section by rope so it lands where it's supposed to. Our tree removal page shows the steps.

Don't wait on the dead ones. Every season a dead tree stands, it's drier, weaker and harder to dismantle safely. There's more on that under dead tree removal.

  • A dead ash. Emerald ash borer killed most of the untreated ones in Lake County, and they get brittle fast
  • A big cottonwood or willow that's dropping limbs on the house or the dock
  • A tree leaning a little harder every year toward a roof or a road
  • A crowded volunteer, like a box elder or mulberry, growing into the fence or the foundation

When a Tree Comes Down in a Storm

Call, don't text, if a tree is on the house, on a car, or blocking the driveway. The number is (224) 944-8652. Say what it landed on and what it's blocking when you call.

The crew takes storm calls as fast as it can get to them. There's no set response time. You'll get a straight answer about when we can make it.

If the tree took wires down with it, or it's leaning in them, stay away and call ComEd first. We don't touch anything in the power lines. When it's safe, the crew cuts the tree free and hauls it off. That's covered under fallen tree removal.

Tree Trimming and Crown Raising in Gages Lake

A lot of yards around the lake are shaded wall to wall. If you like the trees but want some sky, some light on the lawn, or headroom over the driveway, trimming gets you there.

Crown raising removes the lowest limbs. Thinning takes out some of the interior branches, so the canopy isn't as dense and catches less wind. Neither one is topping. Topping means sawing the top of the tree off flat, and it's bad practice that this crew won't do. See crown thinning and raising.

Schedule it for the dormant season if you can, late fall through winter. For oaks and elms that isn't optional. Pruning them in the growing season exposes fresh cuts to the beetles that spread oak wilt. Broken and dead limbs can come off in any month.

Grinding Out Old Stumps

Older lake properties collect stumps. One by the shed, two along the drive, a rotted one in the lawn you keep hitting with the mower. They can all go on the same quote.

Utilities come first. Call JULIE at 811, which is free in Illinois, and have the buried lines marked before the grinder arrives. If you need the stump and main roots fully out for a foundation or a new driveway, look at stump removal too.

Free Quotes, Flat Prices and Cleanup in Gages Lake

Text a photo and tell us you're in Gages Lake. You'll get a written price. Small jobs are quoted from photos, and big removals get a free visit first. It's a flat price for the job, agreed before any cutting.

The price reflects the tree's size, what it's standing over, its condition, how well equipment can reach it, and whether the stump is part of the deal. No published rates. The pricing page covers the reasoning.

Afterward the crew cleans up and hauls the brush and wood away. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so it's chipped and recycled. Firewood can stay if you ask for it.

Gages Lake Tree Service Questions

My mailing address says Grayslake or Gurnee, but I live by Gages Lake. Do you come here?

Yes. Gages Lake and Wildwood are unincorporated, so the town on your mail is borrowed from a neighbor. It makes no difference to us. The crew serves all of Lake County, and that includes Grayslake and Gurnee themselves. Put your street address in the text with your photo and we'll know where you are.

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in unincorporated Lake County?

We can't answer that for your lot, and you shouldn't take a tree company's word for it anyway. There's no village hall for Gages Lake, so the question goes to the county. Call before you set a date for the removal. If the tree is near the road or the shoreline, mention that when you ask.

Can a crew even get down my road?

Tell us about it up front and we'll plan around it. Send a photo of the road and your driveway along with the tree. Tight access doesn't stop a job, but it changes how brush and logs get out, and that's one of the things the price is based on. Better we know before the quote than the morning of.

The tree by the road is dying. Is it mine to remove?

Maybe not. Trees in the road right-of-way often belong to whoever maintains the road, and in an unincorporated area that's the township or the county. Find out before you pay anyone to cut it. If it does turn out to be on your property, text us a photo and we'll price the removal.

The cottonwood by my dock is huge. Can you take it down?

Yes, but that one gets a free visit before any price. A large tree at the water's edge has to be climbed and lowered in sections, with every piece brought back onto land. We need to see the lean, what's under it, and how the wood gets from the shore to the street. Text a photo to get things started.

Do you trim branches that are growing into the power lines?

No. Work in or touching power lines isn't something we do. That belongs to ComEd, the electric utility here. Call them about limbs in their lines. We can trim the rest of the tree, the parts over your roof, yard and driveway, and leave the section near the wires for the utility.

Can trees be removed in winter when the lake's frozen?

Yes. Winter is a fine time for tree work. The leaves are down, so there's less brush and the crew can see the whole structure. Firm, frozen ground also takes heavy wood better than a soggy spring yard does. And for oaks and elms, winter is the only season routine pruning should happen.

Do you offer lawn care or landscaping along with tree work?

No. Lakefront Tree Service sticks to four things: tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding, and emergency storm work. We don't do lawn care, landscaping or planting. When a job's done, the brush and wood are hauled away and the area is raked, so it's ready for whoever handles your yard.
