Storm Damage and Emergency Tree Service in Port Barrington

River trees are storm trees. Cottonwood, willow and silver maple put on size quickly, and fast wood is weak wood. Add ground that stays wet near the Fox River, and a hard wind can bring down a limb as big as a small tree, or the whole thing, roots and all.

If that happens and it's on your house, on a vehicle or blocking your driveway, call (224) 944-8652. Please call for that, don't text. Lakefront Tree Service handles storm calls as fast as the crew can get there. We won't give you a time we can't stand behind.

Wires change everything. A tree resting on power lines, or snarled in them, is ComEd's before it's anybody else's. Keep back and let them clear it. After that, we do the cutting. Here's more on our emergency tree service.

Port Barrington Lots: River Frontage, Channels and Big Shade Trees

The village is small and it follows the water. It sits on the Fox River where Lake and McHenry counties meet, with Island Lake to the north and Lake Barrington to the south. The Fox River Forest Preserve and its marina are right here too.

A lot of homes back up to the river or a channel, with a pier at the bottom of the yard and tall trees up top. Away from the water there are ordinary neighborhood streets with maples, spruce and the occasional oak.

Our crew is insured and drives out from Libertyville. Port Barrington is at the far west edge of Lake County, and it's on our list like every other town in the county.

Tree Removal in Port Barrington

Taking down a tree by the water has a few wrinkles. The ground can be soft, so heavy equipment may not be able to get close without tearing up the yard. The tree may lean out over the river or a seawall. And there's often a pier, a boat or a shed sitting right under it.

So it gets planned. A leaning cottonwood is climbed and pieced down, with the wood roped back toward the yard instead of dropped in the water. Every one is different, which is why a big removal gets a free visit before you get a price. You can see how a removal goes step by step.

Dead trees go first. Most untreated ash in northern Illinois has been killed by emerald ash borer, and dead ash turns brittle fast. If you've got one, look at ash tree removal and don't let it stand another winter.

Tree Trimming and Pruning Along the Fox River

Fast growers need more upkeep. A silver maple or willow throws long, heavy limbs, and the longer they get, the more leverage the wind has. Shortening those limbs back to a solid side branch, and taking out the dead and cracked ones, lowers the odds of a failure. It's not a promise. It's maintenance.

What we won't do is top the tree. Cutting the top off flat makes things worse, because what grows back is weakly attached.

Do routine pruning in late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. Got oaks or elms? They have to wait for cold weather, since warm-weather cuts attract the beetles that spread oak wilt. Dead and broken limbs are fine to remove any time. Thinning a heavy canopy or lifting low limbs off the roof falls under crown thinning and raising.

Stump Grinding in Port Barrington

Cottonwood and willow stumps don't always quit. Left alone, they can send up sprouts for a good while. Grinding gets the stump itself out of the picture and gives you the lawn back.

The steps: utilities get marked first through JULIE, which is a free 811 call in Illinois. Then we grind, rake up and go. If the stump is close to a seawall or down a slope, send a photo so we can see how to reach it.

Our stump grinding crew can do stumps from our own removals or ones left behind by someone else.

Permits and Rules for Removing Trees in Port Barrington

Check before you cut. Many Lake County villages have tree rules and some require a permit, even for a tree that's entirely on your lot. Your village may be one of them, so call village hall first. If the tree is on the riverbank, mention that and ask whether anything else applies. We don't interpret ordinances. We just don't want your job held up.

Port Barrington Tree Service Pricing and Free Quotes

Every job gets one flat price, in writing, before any cutting. Getting it is easy: text a photo of the tree, limb or stump to (224) 944-8652 and tell us you're in Port Barrington. Small jobs are quoted off the photos. Bigger ones get a free visit. Then you pick the day.

  • What's under and around it: a roof, a fence, a garage or wires

Port Barrington Tree Service Questions

Can you remove a tree that leans out over the river?

Yes, though it takes planning. A tree leaning over the water gets climbed and cut in sections, and the pieces are roped back to the yard so they don't end up in the Fox. We'd look at it in person first. That visit is free, and you get a flat written price before we do anything.

Are big cottonwoods worth keeping?

That's your call, and plenty of people love theirs. They're big shade trees. They also grow fast, have softer wood and drop limbs as they age. If yours is sound and away from the house, trimming out dead and overextended limbs may be all it needs. If it's hollow, cracked or leaning on the roof, removal makes more sense. Text photos and we'll give you a straight answer.

The ground in my yard is soft. Will the work tear it up?

We look at that before we quote. Access for equipment is one of the things the price is based on, and on soft riverfront ground the answer is sometimes to keep machines back and move wood by hand. Tell us if your yard holds water or if there's a septic field, and show us in a photo how we'd get in.

Do you work in Port Barrington on Sundays?

By appointment. The normal week is Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm. If Sunday is the only day you're home, ask when you text and we'll see what can be set up. Storm damage is different. If a tree is on a house, a car or blocking a driveway, call (224) 944-8652 and we'll get there as fast as the crew can.

Will a willow stump grow back if I leave it?

It can try. Willows and cottonwoods are known for pushing up sprouts from a cut stump. Grinding takes the stump down below the surface so you can cover it with soil and seed. Before grinding, underground utilities must be marked through JULIE at 811, which is free. We don't spray or treat stumps, so grinding is the fix we offer.

Who handles a tree that fell on the power lines?

ComEd. They're the electric utility here, and a tree touching or caught in the lines is theirs to make safe first. Don't go near it and don't try to pull branches off. Power lines are off limits for our crew, in them or touching them. Once the utility has cleared it, we can cut up what's on the ground and haul it away.

Does Port Barrington need a permit for tree removal on private property?

It might. We don't state any town's rules because they vary and they change. A good number of Lake County villages have tree ordinances, and some want a permit before a tree on private land comes down. Call village hall, tell them what tree and where, and ask. If you're on the riverbank, mention that as well.

What do you do with the wood and brush?

It leaves with us unless you say otherwise. Brush is chipped and wood is recycled. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so none of it is dumped. If you'd like the wood for a fire pit or a stove, tell us ahead of time and we'll leave it cut where you want it.
