Emergency Tree Service and Storm Cleanup in Fox Lake
Start with the urgent stuff. If a tree is on your house or car, or it's lying across the driveway, call (224) 944-8652. Calling beats texting when it's that kind of problem. The crew heads to storm calls as fast as it's able. There's no promised arrival time, because one storm can put trees down from here to Lake Michigan.
While you wait, stay out from under it. A tree that's hung up in another tree or propped on a roof is loaded like a spring. Don't cut the limb that's holding it. And if any wire is involved, back off and call ComEd. Downed and tangled lines are theirs to make safe before anybody touches the wood.
After the dangerous part is handled, there's usually plenty left: broken tops, split limbs still hanging, brush everywhere. Cleaning up after a storm is the same flat-price deal as any other job. You get the number in writing first.
Shoreline Lots, Channels and the Trees Around Fox Lake
A lot of Fox Lake started as summer cottages. Small lots, houses close to the water, one lane in and out. Many of those cottages are year-round homes now, but the lots didn't get any bigger and the trees didn't stop growing. So you get a full-grown cottonwood wedged between a house and a seawall.
Cottonwoods and willows love the wet ground along the lakes and the dug channels. They grow quick and they grow big, and the wood is soft. Silver maples do the same thing a little farther from the water. Up on the higher ground, away from the shore, you'll find oaks and hickories that are a lot sturdier and a lot older. Grant Woods, just east of the village, is a good picture of what that ground looked like before the houses.
Then there's the ash. Like everywhere in Lake County, most of the untreated ones are dead or close to it.
Tree Removal on Tight Fox Lake Lots
Room is the problem here more often than the tree is. On a narrow lake lot there may be no place to drop a trunk and no way to bring anything big around the side of the house. So the tree comes apart in the air. It's worked from the top down, and every piece gets tied off and lowered so it doesn't land on the roof, the deck or the neighbor's fence.
That takes longer than felling a tree in a field, and the quote reflects it. It's also why a big job needs to be seen in person. For a big removal, we come out for a free look before giving you a price. Photos don't always show the shed behind the tree or the wires running past it.
Don't let a dead tree sit. Dead ash and dead cottonwood both get brittle, and brittle wood breaks where you don't expect it to. If you're looking at a dead ash that needs to come out, the cheapest day to do it is usually the soonest one.
Stump Grinding for Fox Lake Yards
On a small lot, a stump eats space you actually need. It's where the fire pit would go, or the kayak rack, or just a clear path to the pier. Grinding it out gives that ground back.
We can do stump grinding along with the removal or come back for stumps somebody else left. What matters most is how the grinder gets to it. Measure the narrowest spot between the street and the stump, usually a gate or the gap beside the house, and send that along with a photo.
Marking the utilities is step one. Call JULIE at 811, it's free, and the public lines get flagged. On lake lots, also think about what JULIE won't mark. Private lines to a pier light, a pump or a detached garage are yours to point out. If the property has a septic tank or field, show us where that is too.
Trimming and Pruning Trees in Fox Lake
Regular pruning is the cheap way to avoid the storm call. Taking the dead wood and the overextended limbs out of a big tree before the wind does it for you is a lot less exciting, which is the point.
On willows and cottonwoods, that means removing heavy limbs that hang over the roof, the driveway or the dock, and cleaning out what's already dead. On maples, it's thinning crowded growth and taking weight off weak forks before they split. We make clean cuts and leave the tree's natural shape. We don't top trees, ever. A topped tree comes back with weak, fast shoots that break even easier.
Most pruning is best done when the tree is dormant, from late fall through winter. Frozen ground helps on soft lake lots too, since it's easier on the lawn. Oaks and elms should only be pruned in winter. In the warm months, fresh cuts attract the beetles that carry oak wilt. The one exception is a limb that's already broken.
What a Tree Job Costs in Fox Lake and How Quotes Work
You won't find a price list here, and we don't quote by the foot. Every job gets one flat price, in writing, before any cutting starts. The quote is free.
To get one, text a clear photo to (224) 944-8652 with your town. For trimming, a single limb or a stump, that's usually all we need. For a whole tree, especially a big one near a building, we'll set up a free visit.
Five things move the price: the size of the tree, where it's standing, what shape it's in, how hard it is to reach, and whether the stump's included. On the lakes, access is the big one. How we price tree work goes into more detail.
Fox Lake Permits, Cleanup and Hauling
Before removing a tree, find out if there's paperwork. Many villages in Lake County have tree rules, and some require a permit for removal on private property. Your village may require a permit, so check with village hall before anything else. If you're really in unincorporated territory, the way Ingleside next door is, ask the county.
Once the saws are off, the cleanup starts. The brush goes into chips and leaves with us. Wood is hauled too, unless you want it. Since Illinois bars yard waste from landfills, all of it is recycled. If you want firewood, tell us before we start and we'll leave it cut where you want it.
