Trees and Lots in Fox Lake Hills

The name tells you most of it. This is hilly, wooded ground beside Fox Lake, off Grand Avenue, in unincorporated Lake County. Lake Villa is the next town east, and the village of Fox Lake is close by.

Houses sit among the trees instead of the other way around. Oaks and hickories make up the old canopy, with maples and box elder filling in underneath, and dead ash still standing here and there after emerald ash borer came through.

Slopes matter in tree work. A tree on a hillside falls and rolls differently than one on flat lawn, and getting equipment up or down a grade isn't always possible.

Lakefront Tree Service is based in Libertyville and insured for tree work. We serve all of Lake County, the unincorporated parts included.

Tree Removal in Fox Lake Hills

On a wooded lot, the question usually isn't whether you have a tree that should come down. It's which one first.

Start with what can hit something. A dead oak over the roof. An ash with the bark falling off beside the driveway. A tree with a split trunk leaning at the garage. Trees deep in the back that can only fall on other trees are lower on the list.

Removal on a slope or between other trees is climbing work. The tree comes down in sections so it doesn't hang up in its neighbors or slide downhill into something. We'll want to see it in person, and that visit costs nothing. There's more on dead tree removal if that's what you're dealing with.

Stump Grinding on Fox Lake Hills Lots

Back in the woods, a lot of people leave stumps, and that's fine. Near the house, the driveway or a path, it's a different story. You trip on it, you mow around it, and it sits there for years.

Grinding takes it below the surface. First the buried utilities are marked, which is a free call to JULIE at 811 in Illinois. Tell us too if you have a septic system or a private line near the stump, since JULIE doesn't mark those.

If the stump is on a grade, send a photo that shows the slope. Stump grinding is priced by the job like everything else.

Oak Pruning and Tree Trimming in Fox Lake Hills

With oaks in the mix, the calendar is the first thing to get right. Don't prune oaks from spring through early fall. Fresh cuts in warm weather attract the beetles that spread oak wilt, and that's not a risk worth taking with the trees that make the lot what it is.

Wait for winter. The one exception is an emergency cut on a limb that's already broken. Our trimming and pruning page has the timing for other kinds of trees.

Beyond timing, trimming here is mostly about deadwood and clearance. Dead limbs over the roof or the deck come out. Branches lying on the shingles get cut back. Lower limbs get raised over the drive. The crew doesn't top trees, no matter how tall they've gotten. If you've got one heavy limb that worries you, removing that limb may be all you need.

Tree Rules in Unincorporated Lake County

Fox Lake Hills isn't inside a village, so there's no village hall to call. That doesn't mean there are no rules. Lake County handles the unincorporated areas, so ask the county before taking down trees. If your part of the neighborhood has an association, check with them as well.

We don't give out ordinance details, because they aren't ours to give and they change. A quick call before you book a date is all it takes.

Storm Cleanup and Fallen Trees in Fox Lake Hills

More trees means more storm damage. After a windstorm you'll likely find some mix of limbs on the roof, a top broken out and hung up in the next tree, or a whole tree across the driveway. Hung-up tops and limbs are dangerous. They can let go without warning, so don't walk under them and don't try to pull them down.

A tree on the house, on a car or blocking the driveway is a phone call: (224) 944-8652. Storm calls up here get the crew as soon as it can reach you. Anything in the power lines is ComEd's first, and we stay off it until they're done.

For the rest, text photos and see our page on cleaning up after a storm.

Quotes, Pricing and Cleanup for Fox Lake Hills Tree Service

Text a photo and tell us you're in Fox Lake Hills. Since it's unincorporated, add your street address so we find the right place. You get a written price. Small jobs come straight from the photos. A big removal means we stop out first, free. The date is up to you.

One flat price, agreed before cutting. On these lots the big factors are where the tree stands and whether we can get equipment to it, along with size, condition and whether the stump is included. How we price tree work explains it.

We clean up when we're done and haul the brush and wood. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so brush is chipped and wood is recycled. With a wood stove or a fire pit, you may want to keep it. Just say so and we'll leave it cut where you want.

Fox Lake Hills Tree Service Questions

Who do I ask about tree permits if I'm unincorporated?

Lake County. Fox Lake Hills isn't part of a village, so the county is the place to start. Ask whether anything applies to the tree you want removed and where it stands. If there's a neighborhood association for your street, check with them too. We can't tell you what the rules say, but we can wait while you find out.

Can you take down a tree on a steep slope?

Yes. It's slower than flat ground. The tree is climbed and cut in sections, and the pieces are controlled with ropes so they don't roll or slide. Getting equipment to it may not be possible, and that affects the price. Send a photo that shows the slope and what's below it. We'll come look at big ones for free.

I have several dead trees in the woods behind my house. Do they all need to go?

Not necessarily. The ones to deal with are those that could hit the house, the garage, the driveway, a wire or a spot where people spend time. A dead tree far back that can only fall into the woods is less urgent. Text photos of the ones you're worried about and we'll price them together or one at a time.

Why can't my oak be trimmed in June?

Oak wilt. The beetles that spread it are drawn to fresh pruning cuts, and the risk runs through the growing season, roughly spring through early fall. An oak pruned in winter doesn't have that problem. If a limb breaks in a June storm, that's an emergency cut and it's fine to take it off. Routine shaping should wait for cold weather.

Can I keep the oak for firewood?

Sure. Tell us before the job and we'll leave the wood cut where you want it instead of hauling it off. The brush still gets chipped and taken. If you don't want the wood, it's hauled and recycled. Either way the yard gets cleaned up before we leave.

A broken top is hung up in another tree. Is that an emergency?

Treat it like one. A hung-up top or limb can drop with no warning, so keep everyone out from under it. If it's over the house, a car or the driveway, call (224) 944-8652 instead of texting. If it's out in the yard away from everything, text a photo. Either way, don't try to yank it down yourself.

Do you come all the way out to Fox Lake Hills from Libertyville?

Yes. We serve every town in Lake County, and that includes the unincorporated neighborhoods up by the Chain O'Lakes. Text a photo and your address to (224) 944-8652. Crew hours are 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are by appointment. The quote is free, done from photos or with a visit.

Do you spray for pests or treat oak wilt?

No. We don't spray, inject, diagnose or treat trees. We don't plant, cable or brace either, and we don't do landscaping or lawn care. If you think an oak is sick, get it looked at by someone who does diagnosis. If a tree is dead or has to come down, that's where we come in: removal, pruning, stump grinding and storm work.
