Tree Work in Park City: Tight Spaces and Close Neighbors

A big share of Park City is manufactured home communities. The rest is small single-family lots and the businesses along Belvidere Road. In all of it, trees and buildings are packed close. A maple that started as a sapling beside the carport now hangs over the home, the shed and the deck next door.

The trees are mostly the fast, tough kinds: silver maple, boxelder, cottonwood, Siberian elm and honey locust, plus spruce and arborvitae planted for a bit of privacy. Fast-growing trees have weaker wood, so they shed limbs. A limb that would only dent a gutter on one house can do real damage to a lighter roof.

Dead ash shows up here too. Emerald ash borer killed most untreated ash around Lake County, and a dead one beside a home is not something to leave standing. Here's what taking out a dead tree involves.

Tree Removal Permission and Permits in Park City

Sort out whose tree it is before anything else. In a manufactured home community you may own the home and rent the lot. If so, the tree might belong to the community and not to you. Ask the office before you hire anyone. They might handle it. They might tell you to go ahead. Get the answer first.

If you own your lot, the city is the one to ask. Plenty of towns in the county have rules about taking trees down, sometimes with a permit, even on a lot you own. Yours may require one, so call city hall before you set a date.

Tree Removal in Park City

Dropping a tree whole is rarely an option here. There's a home on one side, a parking pad on the other and a shed behind. So the tree comes down in small pieces from the top, each one lowered clear. Sometimes the only way out is the driveway, and every piece gets carried.

Tree removal on a tight lot costs more than the same tree in an open field, simply because it takes longer. Send photos that show what's around the trunk in every direction. If the tree is dead, say so. Dead wood is brittle and changes how the crew handles it.

Park City Tree Trimming and Limb Removal

Often the tree can stay if a few limbs go. The ones lying on the roof. The ones that scrape the siding when the wind blows. The low ones over the parking spot. Removing problem limbs is quick work and is usually priced from a photo.

A fuller trim takes out dead and broken wood and pulls the canopy back from the home. For most trees the right season is late fall through winter, when they're dormant. Oaks and elms should wait for winter no matter what, unless a limb is broken, because of the beetles that spread oak wilt.

And no topping. Cutting a tree's top off flat is bad practice and the crew won't do it, even when the tree feels too tall for the lot. If it really is too big for where it stands, the choices are a careful trim or taking it out.

Storm Damage Cleanup in Park City

When a storm takes a limb down here, it rarely lands on open grass. If a tree or a big limb is on your home, on your car, or across the drive, call (224) 944-8652 and talk to us directly. Storm calls get taken as fast as the crew can reach you.

Look for wires before you step outside. A limb on a line is ComEd's job first, so stay away until they've cleared it. After that, cleaning up storm damage is cutting, carrying and hauling until the lot is clear.

Stump Grinding in Park City

On a small lot a stump is in the way of everything. Grinding takes it below ground level so the spot is usable again.

Stump grinding needs two things from you: a clear path in, and utilities marked. The marking is a free call to JULIE at 811. On a rented lot, loop in the community office too, since water, sewer and electric can run in places you wouldn't guess.

Park City Tree Service Prices: One Flat Quote, Cleanup Included

Send a text to (224) 944-8652 with a photo of the tree, limb or stump and the words Park City. The reply is a written price. For most small-lot jobs the photos are all that's needed. If it's a large removal, someone stops by to look, at no charge. The price is flat, it covers the job, and you agree to it before any cutting.

The price depends on the size of the tree, where it stands, its condition, access, and whether the stump's included. See how we price tree jobs for the details.

Cleanup is part of it. The crew cleans up the lot and hauls the brush and wood away to be chipped and recycled. Firewood is the exception: ask for it and it's cut and left on your lot. The crew is insured for tree work, based in Libertyville, and works all over this part of the county, including Gurnee next door. Work days are Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm, plus Sundays if you set it up ahead.

Park City Tree Service Questions

I own my manufactured home but rent the lot. Can I have a tree removed?

Ask the community office first. On a rented lot the tree may belong to the community, and they may have their own rules about who can cut it. If the office says it's your call, send us a photo and we'll price it. If it's theirs, they're the ones who need to hire it out.

Can you take down a tree that's growing right against my home?

Yes. A tree that close comes down in small sections from the top, with each piece lowered away from the home. Nothing gets dropped. Send photos of the trunk where it meets the ground and of the side of the home it's touching, so we can see how much working room there is.

Will you cut only the branches that touch my roof?

Sure. If the rest of the tree is fine, taking off the limbs over the roof is a small job and can usually be quoted from a photo. Take the picture from far enough back to show the limbs and the roof together. A broken or dead limb can be removed any time of year.

Do I need a permit from Park City to remove a tree?

You might. That depends on the city's own tree rules, and rules like that can cover trees on private lots. We're not the ones to say what they are. Call city hall before you schedule and ask. If you rent your lot, check with the community office as well.

A limb fell on my carport. What should I do first?

Make sure nobody's under it and check for wires. If a line is down or tangled in the limb, stay back and call ComEd. Then call (224) 944-8652. Don't text for this one. The crew will come as fast as it can. Take photos for your insurance while you wait, from a safe distance.

Is there room to grind a stump on a small lot?

Usually. The grinder needs a path to the stump and a little space around it. Tell us what's nearby, like skirting, steps, a shed or a fence, and send a photo. Before grinding day, have the buried lines located through JULIE. Dial 811. It's free.

My tree is too tall. Can you just cut the top off?

No. That's called topping, and the crew doesn't do it. It weakens the tree and the regrowth is thin and poorly attached, so you end up with more falling branches, not fewer. Better options are trimming back the specific limbs that worry you, or removing the tree if it's truly too big for the spot.

Do you haul everything away or leave a pile at the curb?

Everything gets hauled. Brush, branches and wood all leave with the crew, and the lot gets cleaned up before they go. Yard waste can't go to a landfill in Illinois, so the brush is turned into chips and the wood is recycled. The only thing left behind is firewood, and only if you asked for it.
