Storm Damage and Emergency Tree Service in North Barrington

Start with the worst day, since that's when most people first look for a tree crew. A storm goes through overnight. In the morning there's an oak limb through the deck rail, or a whole tree across the driveway.

If it's on the house, on a car or blocking you in, call (224) 944-8652. Don't text. We take storm calls as fast as the crew can reach them, and we won't make up an arrival time to make you feel better.

Before you walk up to it, look for wires. Anything touching or tangled in a power line is ComEd's to handle first. Limbs hung up overhead are the other danger. Stay out from under them. Once it's safe, our emergency tree work gets the tree off whatever it hit and out of your way.

North Barrington Yards: Hills, Oaks and Lake Lots

North Barrington is almost all homes on large wooded lots, spread over rolling ground off Route 59 and Route 22. Honey Lake is here, and there are ponds and wetlands tucked between the hills.

The high ground is oak and hickory woods, and many houses were set right into it. White oak, red oak, bur oak, shagbark hickory, with cherry and maple underneath. Down by the water it shifts to willow and cottonwood. Yards add spruce, pine and ornamental trees near the house.

Slopes are what make tree work here different. A tree on a hillside often leans downhill, the cut wood wants to roll, and equipment can't always get close.

Tree Removal in North Barrington

We take down trees that are dead, failing or in the wrong place. On a wooded hillside lot, that's rarely a simple drop. The removal crew works the tree down in sections and lowers each one so it doesn't slide or roll into something.

Ash trees are a big share of the dead ones. Emerald ash borer has killed most untreated ash in Lake County. Once an ash dies it gets brittle fast, which makes it more dangerous to stand under and harder to take down. If you have dead ash near the house or the driveway, ash removal belongs near the top of the list.

Big trees close to the house get a free visit before a price. We want to see the lean, the slope and the way out.

North Barrington Tree Service Quotes and Pricing

Here's how you get a price. Text a photo of the tree, limb or stump, and mention your town. We send a written price. A small job is quoted off your photos. Large removals get that free visit.

It's a flat price for the whole job, set before any cutting. Five things drive it:

No dollar figures on the site, because they'd be wrong for your tree. There's a fuller explanation on the pricing page.

  • The tree's overall size
  • Where it stands, like open yard versus over a roof, fence, garage or wires
  • Its condition, since dead and brittle wood is harder to work
  • Access for equipment, which on a slope can be limited
  • Whether the stump goes too

Oak Pruning and Tree Trimming in North Barrington

Most of the big trees here are oaks, and oaks come with one firm rule. Don't prune them in the growing season. From about spring through early fall, fresh cuts attract the beetles that spread oak wilt. Winter is safe. We book oak pruning for then.

Elms follow a similar rule. Most other trees also do best with a dormant trim, late fall through winter. A dead, cracked or hanging limb is different. It can come down any time, on any tree.

A normal trimming visit covers deadwood, limbs over the roof, branches on the driveway, and sometimes thinning a crown to let some sun reach the yard. What it never includes is topping. Cutting the top flat is bad practice and we won't do it.

Stump Grinding in North Barrington

A stump in the woods can stay. A stump in the lawn, by the walk or in the middle of a planting bed usually has to go. Stump grinding takes it below the surface. You get chips. Keep them or we take them.

Mark first, grind second. Underground utilities need to be located, and that's a free call to JULIE at 811. If you're on a septic system or have a private line to a well, an outbuilding or a gate, tell us where it runs. Those aren't marked by JULIE.

On steep ground, getting a grinder to the stump isn't always possible. We'll tell you up front if that's the case.

Permits, Cleanup and Wood Hauling

Before a removal, check the rules. Plenty of villages in Lake County regulate trees, and some of them require a permit for a removal on private property. We don't know what your lot needs, so ask village hall first. If your neighborhood has an association or private roads, ask them too.

When we're done cutting, we clean up and haul away the brush and the wood. None of it is dumped. Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills, so the brush is chipped and the logs are recycled. If you want the oak for firewood, tell us and we'll leave it cut where you want it.

We're an insured crew out of Libertyville. We work all of Lake County, including Lake Zurich and Hawthorn Woods to the east of you.

North Barrington Tree Service Questions

My lot is steep. Does that make tree removal cost more?

It can. Access is one of the things the price is built on, and a slope limits where equipment can go. More of the work gets done by hand, and the wood has to be moved carefully so it doesn't roll. Send photos of the tree and the hill. You'll get one flat written price before anything is cut.

A dead oak is standing in the woods behind my house. How do I know if it's a risk?

We don't diagnose trees, but there's a simple check anyone can do. Look at how tall it is and what's within that distance: the house, the deck, the driveway, the play area. If it could reach any of them, have it looked at. Dead wood gets weaker every year. Text a photo that shows the tree and what's near it.

I just noticed a broken limb on my oak in June. Should I wait until winter?

No. A broken or hanging limb is a hazard and should be dealt with now. The winter-only rule is for routine pruning, because fresh cuts in the growing season attract the beetles that spread oak wilt. An emergency cut on a damaged limb is the exception. Call or text a photo and we'll get it on the schedule.

We're on a private road. Can your trucks get in?

Tell us about it when you text. Narrow roads, tight turns, low limbs over the road, gates and small bridges or culverts are all things we need to know before the day of the job. A photo of the entrance helps. Access is part of how the job is priced, so it's better to know early.

Can you thin my woods so more light reaches the house?

We can thin or raise the crowns of the trees near the house, and remove the dead, leaning or crowded ones you pick out. Start with a photo and tell us what you're after. Check village rules before removing live trees. And remember oaks should only be pruned in winter, so plan crown work on those for the cold months.

What if I only want part of a tree taken off, like one big leader?

That's a pruning job, and it's common. A heavy limb or one trunk of a split tree can be removed while the rest stays. We'll look at the photo and tell you if what's left will be a decent tree or a lopsided one. We don't cable or brace, so if it needs that to stay up, removal may make more sense.

Do you charge for coming out to look at a tree?

No. Quotes are free. Small jobs don't need a visit at all, since we can price them from photos you text. For a big removal, we come out, walk around the tree and then give you a written, flat price. You don't owe anything for the look or the quote.

How do I schedule once I have a price?

Reply to the quote and pick a day. The crew's week runs Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm, plus Sundays by appointment. If you're waiting on a permit answer from village hall or an okay from your association, get that first. If utilities need marking for a stump, that gets set up ahead of the work day.
