Tree Trimming and Pruning in Knollwood
A lot of calls from neighborhoods like this one start the same way. The tree's fine, but it's on the roof. Or it's rubbing the gutter, shading out the lawn, or dropping dead sticks on the car every time the wind blows.
That's trimming work, not removal. Pruning a mature tree the right way means taking limbs back to a proper joint, clearing the house, and getting the deadwood out. It doesn't mean cutting the top off. Topping wrecks a tree and we don't do it.
Late fall through winter is the best window for most trees. For oaks and elms, it's the only window we'll use, since cuts during the growing season attract the beetles that spread oak wilt. A limb that's dead, broken or about to fall is fair game any month.
The Yards and Trees in Knollwood
Knollwood sits around Rockland Road and Waukegan Road, east of the tollway, with Lake Bluff on one side and Green Oaks on the other. It isn't its own village. It's an unincorporated part of Lake County with a Lake Bluff mailing address.
The houses went in over a long stretch, so yards vary, but mature trees are the common thread. Oaks and maples do most of the shading. There are spruces and pines planted as screens, and a fair number of stumps and gaps where ash trees used to stand.
Most trees here stand within reach of something: a house, a garage, a fence, or the neighbor's place. That shapes every job.
Stump Grinding for Knollwood Yards
An old stump doesn't hurt anything, but it's ugly and it's in the way. A stump grinding visit is usually short. The stump gets ground below the surface and you're left with a mound of chips. Keep them for mulch or we'll take them.
First, though, the utilities have to be marked. Call JULIE at 811. It's free in Illinois and it needs to happen before any grinding.
If the roots have lifted the lawn or a walkway, mention it. Grinding takes care of the stump and the big roots right at the surface around it. It doesn't chase every root across the yard.
Tree Removal in Knollwood
When a tree is dead, split, hollow or leaning the wrong way, trimming won't save it. Taking it down in a yard with a house close by is done in sections from the top, so every piece is under control on the way to the ground.
Dead ash is still out there. Emerald ash borer has killed most of the untreated ash in Lake County, and an ash that's been dead a while is brittle and unpredictable. Bark falling off in sheets and bare upper limbs are the signs. Removing a dead tree gets harder the longer it stands, so don't let it ride another winter.
For a large tree near the house, we'll come look before we give you a number. That visit is free.
Tree Rules in Unincorporated Knollwood
Here's where Knollwood is different from the towns around it. There's no village hall of its own. Because it's unincorporated, questions about tree removal go to Lake County, not to Lake Bluff.
Many Lake County villages have tree rules, and some require a permit before a tree comes off private property. Unincorporated areas can have their own requirements too. Check with the county before you remove a tree, the same way you'd check with village hall anywhere else. We won't guess at the rules for you.
Trees along the road edge may sit in the right-of-way. If you're not sure a tree is yours, find out before it's cut.
Storm Damage and Broken Limbs in Knollwood
Big old maples are the ones that usually let go in a storm. Silver maples especially carry long, heavy limbs, and wind or ice can snap one where it meets the trunk.
If it's on the house, on a car, or you can't get out of the driveway, call (224) 944-8652. Call, don't text. We handle storm damage as fast as the crew can get there, and we'll be honest with you about when that is.
Never touch a limb that's on a wire, and don't pull on one that's tangled in the line running to your house. ComEd handles the line. We handle the tree once it's clear.
Free Quotes, Flat Prices and Cleanup
Getting a price is simple. Text a photo of the tree, limb or stump to (224) 944-8652 and say it's in Knollwood. Small jobs get a written price from the photos. Bigger removals get a free visit.
The price is flat and it's agreed before any cutting. It comes down to the size of the tree, where it stands, what shape it's in, how equipment gets to it, and whether the stump is included. There's a fuller explanation on our pricing page.
After the work, the crew cleans up and hauls the brush and wood away. Brush is chipped and wood is recycled, because Illinois keeps yard waste out of landfills. If you want the wood for your fireplace, tell us and we'll leave it cut where you want it. Hours are 7am to 7pm, Monday through Saturday. Sundays are by appointment.
